While it can never be proven that the first chakra is the center wherein one’s karmic journey begins, the reality, the energies, and the relation of this first center to one’s vitality and survival are more than simple theory. In the mid-seventies, the results of our Rolf Study provided evidence not only that the red frequency of the first chakra exists but that it is connected in a very real way to an awareness of physical sensation. More than that, this research presented empirical data regarding the frequencies and actual functioning of all the chakras.

Briefly: Subjects were asked to lie on a table, where they were to participate in a Rolfing process. The area of the research in which I took part involved the study of the effects of Rolfing on the energy field. Electrodes were placed over major chakra and acupuncture locations on the subject’s body, with EEG electrodes positioned on the head. Then, during the session, I read both the subject’s and rolfer’s auras and recorded any changes in color, shape, or movement of the fields as I observed them. Simultaneously, the frequencies of the electromagnetic radiation emitted from the subject’s body during the course of the session were recorded on an oscilloscope, which was being monitored by Dr. Hunt in a separate enclosed instrument room. The process was specifically described by one of our participants, himself a scientist:

The UCLA Rolf study, which began in January 1975, demonstrated that deep Rolfing massage results in pronounced changes in the electrophysical activity of muscles. Of even greater significance were the findings of changes in the body’s energy field or aura. The energy field was described by Rev. Rosalyn Bruyere while Dr. Valerie Hunt simultaneously recorded electrophysical activity from The body. To the amazement of all concerned, the two correlated with each other. As a research scientist, I found it interesting to be a participant-observer in this whole process-serving as a subject being examined and listening in as a scientist to each day’s discoveries.

At the movement Behavior Laboratory at the kinesiology Department, Dr. Hunt and her assistants applied electrodes to various areas of my body. The two rolfers in the study then alternated with each other for each of the ten sessions I as being monitored, and Rosalyn read the aura while Valerie stood in her physiological recording booth. Most of the Rolfing sessions began with some manipulation ot the hands or feet and ended with an adjustment of the neck, shoulders, spine, and pelvis. And the time that I did not know much about chakras,acupuncture meridians,or the flow of psychic energy, but I did experience a warm, tingly, spacy feeling soon after the rolfer laid his hands on me and began the deep massage. I experience similar sensations when I meditate or am hypnotized. Rosalyn found that when subjects reported spacey feelings, their auras showed more activity in the throat, third eye, and crown chakras and decreased activity in the legs.

Dr. Hunt’s recordings showed a parallel pattern. In the early sessions, I also had a lot of anxiety about how painful the Rolfing would be, at which times the energy field activity was highest in the heart and throat chakras. Auric analysis of pain and anxiety was probably one of the most fascinating results of the Rolf study. At times, the rolfer’s hands move over long stretches of muscle and there is a strong burning sensation. When a rolfer comes to an area where muscles are knotted or inappropriately bound together, he applies a very deep massage with his knuckles, fists or elbows. This can lead to extremely intense pain. At times I would think, “That wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be” whereas at other times my anxiety raced through my mind and I would think, “What have I gotten myself in for?” Although it wasn’t technically feasible to record physiologically from the actual muscle site being manipulated, Rosalyn did observe that the flash of red appeared over the areas of the body where the subject was experiencing pain from Rolfing.

 

When the deep massage was continued, the first chakra red wave forms shifted back and forth to orange, which is the color of the emotionally related second chakra. Emotional processing went on for some time. Yellow, on the other hand, was observed when subjects dealt with their experience intellectually, trying to overcome pain with their will. The color green, related to transition and loving, was rarely seen in the study. Blue become evident when the subjects recalled early life experiences and violet waveforms were higher in amplitude when the subjects were imaging an experience. The violet would shift from the third eye to the throat and back up to the third eye just before the subject reported they were picturing something.

There was often a pluming of white light at the crown chakra at the same time. The aura was pure white when the subjects reported they were in a higher state of consciousness. The rolfer’s hands and arms usually carried a large blue or white corona but when subjects reported pain (Kundalini red), the rolfer’s aura suddenly changed to a violet pink (the color of empathetic, spiritual loving), and this tended to calm the subject’s field. After the first few sessions, the subjects seemed less affected by the pain of Rolfing.

Red was absent from their field and muscular flinching and wincing lessened. They flowed with the pain as they accepted the soothing violet of the rolfers. Even though the colors of the seven chakras of the body have been variously described by psychics for centuries, the rolf study was the first time these colors were specifically related to certain frequencies of electrophysiological recordings. The primary colors were found to be red, yellow and blue. These are the colors of the first (Kundalini), third (adrenal or solar plexus), and fifth (throat) chakras. The respective physiological frequencies related to these three colors were waveforms with bandwidths of 640 to 800 hertz (cycles per second), 400 to 600 hertz, and 100 to 240 hertz…. In Fourier analysis the pattern of the red waveform was that the irregular groupings of short spikes, whereas yellow resembled a smooth, round sine wave and blue exhibited large sharp peaks and troughs with small deflections riding upon them.

In audio recordings red sounded like a siren, yellow like a musical tone, and blue like a rumble. The secondary colors, orange, green was made up of yellow and blue waveforms, and violet brought together the high frequencies of rsd with the low frequencies of blue. The white corona seen at the crown chakra was a combination of all frequencies just as in the color spectrum

Red On The Oscilloscope

When we explore the red frequency on an oscilloscope, it looks like continuing spirals connected by sine waves, a continuous flaring, an irregular grouping of short spikes. (Metaphorically speaking, the sine wave could be considered the “snake” within the red frequency band). The red wave pattern on the oscillosope actually demonstrates how red energy flows. When working with energy, most healers tend to run noncyclical energy, i.e, direct current. What direct red current does is produce a roller-coaster effect; there is an increase, followed by a decrease of energy flow (which is what the sine wave represents). Then the pattern repeats itself. I believe it is the decrease in energy flow (which tends to feel like downward movement or a sensation of falling) that frightens everybody: we no more get a rush of red than we experience a “sinking” sensation. That is also the sensation we feel in an experience such as anger. Anger produces the same effect when it _ashes. It rises up, and then moves through a depression and then rises again. This cycle is very natural: life’s high times are usually followed by periods of relative stasis, which are followed by crisis, which are followed by another period of statis, and so on.

Red In Rolfing And Healing

During my years of research I saw a great amount of yellow in the first and second chakras. However, during the Rolfing itself I saw only red in the first chakra. Thus it would seem that when someone gets into pain, the first chakra cries for “life”. The late Ida Rolf herself said that pain was overrated.

Pain is not the purpose of Rolfing. The drawing forth of the life force itself is what is important in Rolfing. Healing energy must have at least a carrier band of this life-sustaining red frequency. For one thing, it is needed to make red blood cells. To dissolve calcium also takes red –powerful, hot red. Most healers I know heal in purple, which combines the powerful regenerative red frequency with the “cooler” soothing blue.

One of the results of running energy on a person is vasodilation, which is why people flush when they undergo a healing treatment. Another result is an increase in blood perfusion. Both these phenomena are related to the movement of red energy in a body. One of my mentors channeled red energy between the first and the second centers to stimulate the system. In other words, he used his kundalini energy to tap into another’s. When the system is stimulated in this way, kundalini energy flows from the point of stimulation directly into the heart chamber. Since blood perfusion is increased, the heart suscles relax. This rising kundalini flow also causes one to go into an altered state of consciousness, and the heart chakrs opens.
