Environment: Resilience in the face of Climate Change : Protecting the Red Sea’s Coral Reefs

They were no longer talking about if larges-scale destruction of the ecosystem would occur, but rather when it would. In July 2009 two of the worlds leading experts on coral reefs came to Hurghada, Egypt to speak to an Egyptian audience about the impacts of climate change on coral reefs. The picture they painted was bleak, but they also shared strategies to minimize the damage.

Dr. Paul Marshall, Director of Climate Change Response Programme for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in Australia and Dr. Tony Rouphael, a coral reef ecologist, spoke to a select group of stakeholders in Hurghada. The workshop, organised by Egypt’s largest non-governmental organization working on marine conservation the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), was attended by Dr. Moustafa Fouda, Head of the Nature Conservation Sector at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency as well as a select group of dive operators, reef managers and relevant civil society members. It was intended to give guidance on successful resource management and protection strategies to help Egypt cope with the expected mass coral bleaching and coral death. “Climate change will wipe out most of the worlds coral reefs but the difference between a 2 percent survival rate and 4 percent could be the ability of coral reefs to later repopulate” noted Marshall. That is why, despite the prospects, local communities should still be cautious to manage these unique resources sustainably.
