Computers go Quantum

A team of scientists at Yale University created the first all-electronic processor which uses the quantum nature of particles to carry out its computations. They used familiar solid-state technologies at the core of microprocessor fabrication found in today’s laptops, desktop and cell phones. The processor the scientists devised is meant to form the building block of a quantum computer: a dream computing machine whose power theoretically, but not yet practically, surpasses the power of our current computers by a very long shot.

The break-through processor is made by having over a billion aluminum atoms behave as one single atom and then using them to perform the computation. Having this large collection act as single atoms allows the scientists to harness the inherently weird quantum nature of the subatomic world to perform lightening fast computations which our classical computers can’t even dream of competing with.
