The Egyptian National Competitiveness Council (ENCC) released its 6th annual Egyptian Competitiveness Report on June 30, 2009. The report showed that science and technology continue to be persistent areas of weakness in Egypt and a major source of competitive disadvantage weighing down the nation.

National competitiveness is loosely defined as a country’s ability to provide high and rising standards of living for its citizens. In many ways it is the new paradigm of development, looking at what makes some nation’s prosper and others fall behind, or what makes some countries able to “compete” in the global economy while others loose out. The Global Competitive Index is a tool devised by the World Economic Forum to measure national competitiveness and rank countries accordingly. The index evaluates national competitiveness through a total of 113 different indicators divided into 12 categories - also known as the 12 pillars of competitiveness. Each year the Egyptian Competitiveness Report analyses the findings for Egypt and draws out key messages for policymakers.
